Originally produced in 2012, these pieces were part of EMBODIED ARTICULATIONS, a multimedia research and art collaboration with Ali McMillan. Inspired equally by ancient math and philosophy, feminist anthropology, and design theory, the project unfolded as a series of experiments that jumped erratically between human excess and asceticism. These experiments included: 1. following a Pythagorean diet; 2. making our own candy and beer; 3. building monochords out of both wood and 3D printed materials; 4. producing an "ethnography of amusement" based on a summer of weekly visits to Canada's Wonderland.

The sounds collected here came out of attempts to produce music with an Xbox Kinect sensor and Max MSP, a visual programming language. Programming was guided by Markov Chains, a mathematical model in which the probability of future events in a series is determined by states reached in immediately preceding events.

The music itself was produced by moving our bodies in front of the Kinect sensor to alter tempo and pitch. Musically, the Markov Chains produced subtle shifts in tone and notation. These sometimes barely perceptible changes allow these excerpts to feel like tense, discomfiting loops.
